Exploring Breathtaking Natural Terrain in Hong Kong's Kwo Chau Islands

Scattered across the deep blue ocean east of Hong Kong lies the 29 island collective that is known as the Kwo Chau Islands or Ninepin Island. Also dubbed Fruit Island for its aerial view which resembles a hearty fruit bowl, the three main islands of the group appear as ninepins when viewed from the air, earning it its other nickname “Ninepin”.  Comprising of North Ninepin Island (Hok Tsai Pai, Sai Mei Chau islets), East Ninepin Island (Lung Shuen Pai, Shue Long Chau, Tuen Chau Mei islets) and South Ninepin Island (Tai Chau Mei, Tai Chau, Lai Chi Pai, Ta Long Pai islets) and other smaller islets, the Kwo Chau Islands have long been considered a diver’s paradise although its unique topography has also made it a frequented tourist hotspot.

The most spectacular sights on the island consist of its breathtaking rock formations which date back to a massive volcanic eruption over 140 million years ago. Spewing forth a whopping 70 cubic kilometres of volcanic embers (larger than the volcanic ash produced by Mount St. Helens and Indonesia’s Krakatau volcano combined) the landscapes of the Ninepin Islands burst at the seams creating a series of rugged peaks and wide plains in the process. Highlights on touring the islands include a trip to the monumental “Tiger Mouth Cave” on South Ninepin Island where the colossal sea arch crafted by nature’s own loving hands stands its ground as it has for centuries. Reputed as one of the finest caves on the eastern shores of Hong Kong, guests can stand beneath the rocky arch in awe of its inspiring shape and scale.

The mountainous trail towards Nam Yue Tau also has its fair share of natural arches formed in rock with the crystal clean ocean to the east. Other must-see points of interest include the Tin Hau Temple which was constructed by grateful fishermen centuries ago. Visitors can also view the major plant varieties that inhabit the terrain which mainly consist of Screw Pines and Beach Naupakas. When sailing across from South Ninepin Island to North Ninepin Island, visitors get a stunning view of the hexagonal volcanic rock that adorns South Ninepin Island. Spectacular with its uniformly hexagonal crevices and joints, the rock’s colourful surface has been created due to years of climatic activities which brought colourful minerals to the rock’s surface from deep within the earth.

Home to the famed Chuan Spa, Langham Place Mongkok Hong Kong is a true pioneer among the many luxury Hong Kong hotels on the island. Offering guests a host of exquisite amenities this charming rest is a hotel Hong Kong proudly claims as one of its premier accommodation providers.

Help answer the question about indonesia tours

Can anyone help me how to go to Indonesia from Singapore?
Hello. 3rd week of March,2008 I'm going to Singapore for tour. I'm thinking of spending my weekend in Indonesia via boat. Please help me answer the following questions in my mind right now…

- Name of the ferry to contact and where ports in Singapore and Indonesia should I go to? How much is the fare? How long is the travel via boat?

- Any immigration rules in entering Indonesia? Any travel tips?

- From the port in Indonesia, I wish to go to Bali or Jakarta, any travel tips? How to go to either Bali/Jakarta? Number of travel hours? Travel tips? Cheap hotels?

Thanks… I will definitely appreciate any help/detail I could get.

    1) You can try head to Golden Mile Complex located at Beach Rd for tour packages for Batam and Johore. Five Star Tour and Konsortium has tours to Johor. Check whether they have to tours to Batam or not. Head to Harbor Front Center for tours to Batam and Bintan also.

    2) Its above of the state of Johor. Its about 2.5-3 hrs by bus from Singapore only. For bus ride about 5 hrs, you can reach Port Klang, which is near Kuala Lumpur already !!! But if there is traffic jam along the way, then 5 hour is possible or even longer, as I had spend before 9 hours to Kuala Lumpur nearby, so this is possible.

    3) For flying in and out of Malaysia, yes, its possibly is. Check with other budget airline for comparison.

These countries are in ASEAN, and I'DSTILL advice above is good. You may wish to spend duration of stay as follows to take in as many key sights, eating experiences, shopping, etc as possible:

KL – 2 days(more than enough to cover the city)
Singapore – 3days(the Great SG Sale is now on)
    Indonesia – 3days(avoid western beaches, tsunami-prone)
    Cambodia – 2days

Frankly 10 days trip is insufficient and it may leave you rushed and dissatisfied. 14 days better.

There are heaps of places to see in Bali although for NY there will be heaps of people and hotel prices usually shoots up. Go to the volcanoes, enjoy the spa and the beach. Mind you the beach in Kuta is not advisable to swim in. Food, there is a variety to choose from as well. check with asiarooms.com for your rooms make sure you ask for the peak season rates as we booked at a cheaper rate and when we got there it was US30 more than what we booked.
there are too many spa's to list but when you get there do your window shopping to pick the best rates. Things are more or less in USD but do bring your rupiah. Change with the money changer that is on the kuta streets rather than at the hotel or bank for good rates. That too you have to window shop for the best rates.
In all it was a good experience. Hard Rock is where we partied at for NY countdown but it was rather steep the cover charge.

    Yes.

What you are really looking for (like living in their villages and helping with daily life) is actually called "Community immersions", not "tribal tours".

Go to Projects Abroad (the site below) and request one of their brochures. They have tours in which you, the tourist, can immerse yourself in the intricacies of tribal life in Asia. It covers the nations of Cambodia, China, India, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

    Here's the site: http://www.projects-abroad.net/

For Indonesian community immersions, you can instead go to this website: http://www.infohub.com/vacation_schools/1153.html

For Philippines community immersions, you can go to this website: http://www.gawadkalinga.org/
